New fan writing community! (crossposted) [07 Jan 2012|10:48pm]

chiana606
Hi all! I've just started a community for writing and sharing Little Women fan fic. It's called littlewomen_fic, and what it needs most is members. Writing about all characters and all pairings is welcome, and there will also be discussion and hopefully some fun challenges.

Not too long ago I read Eden's Outcasts: The Story of Louisa May Alcott and Her Father.  It was, an amazing book, and if you haven't read it, I really recommend it.

But, as for the reason of this post, I went ahead and made some copies of a few of the photographs from the books, as well as one or two from a Little Women Treasury.  Enjoy!

This is kind of late notice, but on American Masters tonight they are showing a film about LMA: The Woman Behind 'Little Women' - Monday, December 28, 2009 on PBS

It looks good - I can't wait!

Life, Letters and Journal [07 Dec 2009|12:37am]

piyo_halliwell
My mother treated me to an early Christmas gift in the form of a LMA book I stumbled across at an antique shop. Unless there is some other dates I'm missing, it looks like the book was published in 1891. It's obviously worn and a bit frayed, but I don't mind. One thing that caught my attention was the name under the copyright, J.S.P. Alcott, which I am assuming is Louisa's nephew, John Sewell Pratt Alcott, Anna's younger son (I completely forgot that Louisa had adopted him). And I do love the dedication to Anna.

Little Women Halloween Fic: Scarlet and Ivory (Jo/Laurie, R) [30 Oct 2009|12:37pm]

mariagoner
Title: Scarlet and Ivory
Fandom: Little Women
Characters/Pairings: Jo/Laurie, Laurie/Amy, Cast
Rating: Hard R for very strong implied violence/licentiousness.
Summary: Blood, sin, spite, sex, and sisterly resentment. A tale of horror within the Little Women-verse for Halloween 2009!

Warning: This being a Halloween fic, it's deliberately written to be as disturbing as it can get. Be aware that the better angels of everyone's nature are not currently present. It also contains non-graphic violence and disturbing sexual innuendo. Please don't read if you feel you can't handle seeing this in a classic text!

And sometimes Jo thinks, deep in the night, that Laurie never truly leaves.

Yuletide Fic Exchange-- Nominate Little Women! [14 Oct 2009|08:11am]

mariagoner
Great news!

The awesome Yuletide Obscure Fandoms Fic Exchange (which always manages to get a nice treasure trove of Little Women fic every year) has now opened up for nominations!

That means that if you nominate the Little Women fandom for inclusion in the Yuletide Fic Exchange at this form on the site, we could potentially get a lot of great new fic for the fandom by Christmas. And I for one would love it if people could nominate Little Women-- I definitely want to have more excuses to write more heart-warming Jo/Laurie fic!

And of course, you can nominate plenty of other obscure fandoms for inclusion in the Yuletide Fic Exchange, ranging from Mad Men to Jane Austen's Persuasion. It all depends on what you'd like to read and yourself!

So please take part and nominate Little Women for the fic exchange, if you have the time. I would love seeing it become a part of the fic exchange this year.

Laurie based on "Heir of Redclyffe" character? [01 Aug 2009|08:25am]

mctabby
Here's a bit of trivia to tickle the Jo/Laurie shippers: LMA originally wrote a kiss, but changed her mind.

In the original manuscript version of Little Women, Alcott follows Jo's final and firm refusal speech with this surprising line: "Then he caught her in his arms and kissed her passionately" (Little Women ms). The line is emphatically crossed out. Clearly, Alcott desired for Jo to have a romantic life -- but as her obliteration of the kiss indicates, a connection with the story's hero was not possible.

I'm quoting from this essay: Why Jo Didn't Marry Laurie: Louisa May Alcott and The Heir of Redclyffe by Karen Sands-O'Connor, American Transcendental Quarterly 15 (2001): 23-41.

Sands-O'Connor argues that as well as being based on two guys LMA knew (Ladislas Wisniewski and Alfred Whitman), the character of Laurie was also inspired by Sir Guy Morville in The Heir of Redclyffe by Charlotte M. Yonge. There are some striking parallels - and LMA's girl readers of 1868 would have picked up on them, since the Redclyffe novel was a huge best-seller at the time.

LMA seems to have included a shout-out: at the start of Little Women Chapter 3, titled "The Laurence Boy", Jo is "eating apples and crying over the 'Heir of Redclyffe', wrapped up in a comforter on an old three-legged sofa by the sunny window."

Has anyone else read this article? Do you find Sands-O'Connor's theory convincing?

Hush Now (Jo/Laurie Fic) [08 May 2009|11:28am]

Title: Hush Now
Rating: PG

Fandom: Little Women
Character(s): Jo, Laurie; Jo/Laurie.
Summary:
A blade of grass tickles whisper-soft across her sun-warmed cheek and Teddy's low whistle hums in her ear.
Author's Note: I know, I know. Little Women fic--practically a sin. My sincerest apologies to Louisa May Alcott; I've taken egregious liberties with her characters.

The night is coming on fast and Laurie is looking at her with something strange in his eyes. )

Alcott fan friending thread [21 Apr 2009|09:26pm]

chiana606

So, I recently read Little Women, and I'm currently in the fandom newbie stage where I'm very excited about the work, and eager to talk about it with anyone who will listen.  However, as far as my LJ goes, "anyone who will listen" currently consists of one person.  Thus, I've decided it would be fun to create a livejournal friending survey.  Answer the questions in your reply, read what others say, and find new friends to add to your LJ list!  It's as simple as that.

Little Women Fic: A Night to Remember, Chapter 3 (Jo/Laurie) [04 Apr 2009|05:14am]

mariagoner
My God. Can you believe that it's been almost exactly a month since I last updated this fanfic series? Or that it took me roughly four weeks of furious writerly struggles to finish up with roughly 10 pages consisting of Laurie thinking about Jo and wondering what on earth happened in their proposal scene? This was probably the trickiest chapter I've had to write so far, though I managed to get through it with the help of very kind Black Magik Woman and plenty of other reviewers for chapter 2 that I stupidly have not gotten back to yet. (Especially geniusgirl and chiana606 and dream's sister-- my god did your reviews give me so much to chew on!) But in any case, here's chapter 3 of ANtR. Please be kind and review if you enjoyed the story!

Title: A Night To Remember, Chapter 3
Fandom: Little Women
Series: A Night to Remember
Characters/Pairings: Jo/Laurie, Amy, Fred, Cast
Rating: R, Later NC-17
Summary: She had told him: "I can't betray my sister like this." And he had looked at her with those dark, frantic eyes and whispered: "You are going to be the death of me." Jo, Laurie, and what could have been and might still be.
Note: If you can't handle fairly explicit future descriptions of beloved children's book characters having sex, this may not be the fic for you. Not that I blame you for misgivings, naturally!

Three years, and with the maddening sheen of her lips as she pulled from him, the promise of a dull, respectable, societal redemption at the hands of her golden-haired sister flew away as though it had never been.

Little Women Fic: A Night to Remember, Chapter 2 (Jo/Laurie) [06 Mar 2009|12:37am]

I'm back again, with part 2 of what may be the strangest-- but most wickedly gratifying-- fanfic I've ever written! A hearty thank you to everyone who wrote, commented and encouraged me when I put up part 1. I was afraid I'd be writing directly into the wilderness but I was really surprised and pleased to know that there are actually some damn kind people-- and damn fine writers-- out there who actually are enjoying this as I stumble along with it.

Furthermore, a great deal of thanks goes to everyone who offered to help me with conceptualizing this story and who gave me so much wonderful, constructive criticism. You have all really helped me realize how important building on the characterization is when penning an AU and I hope chapter 2 really reflects my building on top of that. ♥

So, without rambling on still more, we may as well go on to...

I hope it's all right to post fanfic here! I'm a complete novice to the fandom but someone who loves Jo/Laurie dearly enough to take the plunge into a dizzying literate slice of fandom anyway. Thank you all for the wonderful fic that you've already put up, and I hope you enjoy my contribution! Comments and constructive criticism are very much appreciated and anyone willing to serve as a plot-beta for this will be worshiped for hours on end. ♥

It was difficult to say anything with her heart in her teeth, but something in her eyes must have given it away regardless. Something in her gaze that had made his breath strangle in his throat, that had brought the strange glimmer of hope back to his eyes, that had made him step forward hopefully...

Southeastern U.S. Premier

7:15pm LOUISA MAY ALCOTT: THE WOMAN BEHIND LITTLE WOMEN
A film by Nancy Porter & Harriet Reisen
USA, 2008, 84 minutes, English

Part documentary, part drama, this brilliantly crafted film depicts the life and works of Louisa May Alcott using always her own words, the original houses and settings where she grew up and created, and the words of Emerson, Thoreau and other celebrated people she knew. Modern-day Alcott scholars add commentary to this portrait of an extraordinary artist and woman.

Ms. Porter & Ms. Reisen will lead a post-film discussion

Tickets are $10 and sold in the lobby of the Hollywood20 movie theater. No credit card sales. I will be attending with my friend and possibly my boyfriend. If you're interested in meeting up and attending with me, I have connections and can probably get you free tickets. I could also show you around the Sarasota area and give you a place to crash if you're driving from another part of the state.

I will post a review once I see it and if you can't make this showing, keep your eyes out for it elsewhere.
